This is a guide to assist new officials on how to get started. Where to buy gear at, what gear they will need and what we recommend. Each official is responsible for providing their own equipment. Official’s Wearhouse or Ref’s Closet will have everything you’ll need to outfit yourself from head to toe!

Required

Helmet & Visor

BLACK helmets only. Any brand will do. Remove all stickers as well. No white ear loops or chin straps. Visors must be worn by all officials.

Jersey

You will need a CCM referee and a CCM linesman sweater. You could also purchase orange armbands that snap on and off of a linesman sweater. Name plates are only required for high school, WSHL and ACHA.

Whistle

There are two brands, Fox 40 and ACME. Preference varied by official. Most use ACME. They are the most reliable.

Pants

Black pants. The most used brands are CCM and Steven’s. Steven’s pants have the option to have them come with protective padding built in.

Skates

Hockey skates only. No figure skates are permitted.

Not Required, but Recommended

Shin Tights

Shin tights go over your shin guards but under your pants. They keep your pants from getting hung up on the tongue or the tendon guard on your skates.

Protective Equipment

Shin guards, Elbow pads, Girdle (if not built into your pants), Mouthguard, Lightweight padded shirt, Groin protection, ex. a cup, Wrist guards.
